Garbage Disposal Tips You Can Do

Tips for Keeping Your Disposal Running
A few simple habits help your garbage disposal grind better, smell fresher and last longer — and can prevent many of the disposal repair calls we see across Oklahoma City.
Run Cold Water
Run cold water before, during and for about 15 seconds after using your disposal. Cold water keeps grease solid so it gets chopped up and flushed away instead of coating the pipes.
Watch What Goes In
Keep grease, bones, fibrous peels like celery and corn husks, coffee grounds, pasta and rice out of the disposal. These are the most common causes of jams and clogs.
Use the Reset Button
If your disposal hums or won’t turn on, turn off the switch and press the red reset button on the bottom. Never put your hand inside the disposal.

Garbage Disposal Repair FAQs
Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?
A hum usually means the disposal is jammed or the motor is seized. Turn it off at the switch and never put your hand inside. If freeing the jam doesn’t help, we can repair or replace it — call or text (405) 464-1191.
Why is my garbage disposal leaking?
Leaks usually come from a loose sink flange, a worn drain or dishwasher hose connection, or a cracked disposal body. A leak from the bottom of the unit often means the disposal needs to be replaced.
Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?
It depends on the problem. Jams, connections and sink flanges can usually be repaired, but a cracked or rusted-out unit should be replaced. We give you a complete estimate before any work starts so you can decide.
Do you charge for a service call?
